World Trade Center PATH Terminal Hall

New York, NY

Santiago Calatrava is known for his unique architecture and was selected by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to design the Transportation Hub at the World Trade Center. Fabrication of the “ribs” and columns for the PATH Hall Terminal was done by URSSA and Horta Coslada because of their experience in fabricating structures designed by Calatrava. Calatrava’s designs involve fabrication of different types of steel not typically used in the structural steel industry.

Atema provided services for the two companies at three fabrication sites in Spain. Services included design drawing and project specification review, writing and review of RFIs, training for the fabricators’ engineering groups, shop supervision, and inspection to project US code requirements. Atema was also involved in change orders and RFI’s to improve the constructability of welded joints. Because of the unique design of the “rib” joints, Atema developed innovated means by which to conduct the qualification tests.
