Creating or modifying a welding procedure specification? Atema can help.

Here's How It Works

We’ll create or modify welding procedure specifications to meet your needs

  • Take advantage of over 50 years of combined welding experience among licensed professional engineers, quality control and assurance inspectors, welding auditors, and former welders, welding supervisors, and quality control managers.

We have PEs with welding engineering experience and CWIs with years of experience reviewing WPSs for code compliance.

  • Let us evaluate your welding processes, welding equipment, filler metals and preferred joint details. We typically offer remote assistance but onsite visits enable us to also evaluate welder techniques and provide an even more complete solution.

  • We create new WPSs and supporting documentation or revise existing documents that are incomplete or not yet compliant.

  • Depending on the welding code and the situation, we can set up the WPSs as prequalified without needing costly tests. If needed, we can also remotely assist you in preparing to conduct your own procedure qualification tests or come to your location to run them with you.

Our WPS Service is just what you need to take one less requirement off your plate.

Already Have Welding Procedures?

Let us work with you to make sure your welding documents are up to date.

With Atema, your WPS documents will reflect your business needs as well as current industry and supplier standards — more than mere technical compliance, they’ll drive better business results.

  • Annually for Quality Control Inspectors and assistants
  • As needed when the Management Representative needs to delegate responsibilities to personnel new to quality management

  • As needed with key-employee new hires
  • As needed when required by scope changes to your company project qualifications for a client or industry-certification status

  • Whenever you take on new projects with more complex specifications
  • When you encounter critical or trending nonconformances from an internal or external audit

Your Questions, Answered

  • What is A WPS?

A document providing the required welding variables for a specific application to assure repeatability by properly trained welders and welding operators. Think of it as a "recipe" for a code compliant weld.

A WPS provides the parameters for performing a weld including information about the base metal, joint configuration, necessary consumables (wire/rod), preheats, and other mandatory information to meet code requirements.

  • What is a PQR?

A Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) is a document that records a WPS test. Think of it as proof that welding certain materials with desired settings results in reliable high quality welds.

The results of visual, non-destructive and/or destructive testing of the test weld specimens are recorded on the PQR. The recorded test parameters are converted to ranges allowed by the welding code and documented on the WPS.

These welding parameters, or essential variables include base metal, joint configuration, weld preparation, consumables, preheats, electrical parameters like amps and volts, travel speed, and other code required information.

  • How often Should Welding Procedures be Reviewed?

WPSs should be reviewed each project, but also with every update in welding code, or update in electrode manufacture, or change in electrode choice, or change in shop preference.

  • Does Atema Help with PQR Testing?

Remotely, Atema helps identify what and how many tests are required. Onsite, we help with verifying test plate fit up, monitoring the PQR welding, visual inspection of the weld and writing the PQR.

As for the destructive testing, we can suggest an accredited laboratory, depending on your location, who can perform the given required destructive tests.

  • What support does atema provide after wPS creation?

If you need assistance with implementing your welding procedures, Atema can provide training on reading WPSs and how they are used during production. We also provide hands on weld inspection training for your Quality Control Inspectors. See our full training list here.
